Excursions and culture
Bolzano/Bozen, the South Tyrolean capital city is a popular excursion destination. Shop in the historical “Laubengasse” or simply stroll through the old city and enjoy an ice cream in the Piazza Walther… it’s worth it. You should also visit the Ötzi glacier mummy that can be viewed in the museum of archaeology… You’ll be impressed!
You can also spend many pleasant hours in the Bishopric of Bressanone/Brixen in Valle Isarco. The historical old city with its arcades invites you to linger, whether over a coffee in the picturesque Piazza Duomo or during a walk along the Isarco. Those interested in culture can visit the Hofburg or the cloister in the Piazza Duomo.
Trauttmannsdorf Castle and Merano/Meran
Also worth an excursion is the spa city of Merano/Meran. Here you should stop off in the unique garden world of Trauttmannsdorf Castle. Spread over an area of 12 hectares, you’ll experience an impressive perspective of exotic garden landscapes, as well as breath-taking views of the surrounding mountainside. You can also visit the Touriseum, the State Tourism Museum there, which imparts over 200 years of the history of tourism in Tyrol and South Tyrol.
Prösels Castle and the Tagusa School Museum
Worth a special visit is Prösels Castle in Fiè di Sciliar. The castle was built in 1200 by the lords of the castle of Fiè and enlarged into a renaissance castle complex in the early 16th century by the state governor at the time, Leonhardt von Völs.
Tagusa, a little below Castelrotto/Kastelruth, has a small but nice museum. The Tagusa School Museum shows visitors and interested parties the everyday life of pupils between 1933 and 1993. This excursion destination can also be combined with an excellent hike.
